Jua Rescuecenter

Jua Rescuecenter is a center in Watamu that has twelve places for girls to the age of 18 years in crisis situations. The girls are rescued by the Children’s Department from early marriages, prostitution or physical and/or sexual abuse. Some of the girls are pregnant when they are brought to the center. The girls receive food, shelter, medical treatment and counseling. When the girls are pregnant Jua staff guides them during the pregnancy, the delivery and first period as young mothers. The girls can stay at Jua for maximum of six months (or longer if necessary). Jua’s aim is to let the girls, if possible, go back home after staying in Jua.

While in Jua Rescuecenter the girls are encouraged to be responsible for their own future. Some girls are assisted to go back to school. Others start a professional training such as tailoring to enable them to sustain themselves and their child in future.Jua Rescue center stays in touch with the girls for at least one year after they have left the center.

The center is a homely and conducive environment for girls where they can rebuild their self esteem and self respect. The girls learn how to cope with their trauma, to plan for their future and to have fun again.

Jua Rescuecenter was founded in July 2010 by Nelleke Hols, a Dutch health and welfare professional as a result of a long existing wish of the local government. This makes that the center, although young (it opened its doors in June 2011), is well appreciated and recognized by officials and community members. It is run by Nelleke, the founder and manager, assisted by a social worker, two caretakers, a cleaner and a watchman. The project is supported by a board in the Netherlands.Plans for the future are: looking for sustainable funding, buying land and build a home, start a vocational training center and to rescue boys.

Jua (“Jua” means “sun”) Rescuecenter is a place where female volunteers/interns with a positive attitude are more than welcome. Activities that volunteers can do to help the girls to see the sun shine again are:

  • Fun activities with the girls (arts, crafts, music, drama, going to the beach)
  • Encourage and empower the girls in their daily activities
  • Network profile/assessment of potential partners in Kilifi county
  • Fundraising, promotion

Testimonials

Jethro Arts Everything was great and arranged perfectly and professionally. The contact by mail before we travelled to Kenya was clear and easy. The pick up from the airport was without any problems. The introduction day in Kilifi was great as well. Still thanks to Everlyn and the student who has learned us (a couple of words) Swahili. Special thanks to Cocky for her commitment and everything she has done for us. We like to do voluntary work with Kenya Xperience! again.
Echt top. Dit nemen ze me nooit meer af.
Elize van Dalsen My experience with Kenya Xperience! could not have been better.
