Upendo Orphans Project

Upendo Orphans Project is a project run by Upendo Methodist Church Women Group in Kilifi town. The women of this group became so concerned by the increasing number of street children in Kilifi that they decided to meet their needs. The women provide these children with food, education and support. Now they support 35 orphans, just a fraction of those in need of help. The orphans live with their guardians in order to give them a family environment. The focus of Upendo Orphans Project for 2010/2011 is to build a primary school that ensures a education in a child friendly environment.

What the Upendo Orphans Project does:
•    Providing mid-morning porridge, lunch and supper to the children everyday
•    Running a nursery school
•    Providing school uniforms and books
•    Providing an after school care centre for primary school children
•    Providing counselling to the children and their guardians and overseeing their health care

The Upendo Orphans Project also runs an outreach programme that involves home visits to 14 orphans of 4-6 years and their guardians for prayers, counselling and donation of food and clothes.

Possibilities for volunteers;
•    Provide counselling services to children
•    Teaching - to assist in the nursery school and help the older children with school work
•    Playing games and demonstrate the use of toys to children and staff
•    Assisting with computer work and teaching the staff with computer skills.
•    Assisting families to reconstruct their houses by giving them physical and moral support (this programme only runs when there are sufficient resources)
•    Providing nutritional information especially to the children who are HIV infected
•    Assisting in fundraising for building a primary school

Volunteers will work Mondays – Fridays. Peacock Court hotel is a five minutes walk from Upendo Orphans Project (800 shilling single room, 1000 double room), Watergate hotel (1200 shilling single room, 1400 shilling double room), guesthouse Belozi with kitchen facilities (2000 shilling single room, 3000 shilling double room), guest room in private house (2000 shilling per person, including breakfast).

Testimonials

Jethro Arts Everything was great and arranged perfectly and professionally. The contact by mail before we travelled to Kenya was clear and easy. The pick up from the airport was without any problems. The introduction day in Kilifi was great as well. Still thanks to Everlyn and the student who has learned us (a couple of words) Swahili. Special thanks to Cocky for her commitment and everything she has done for us. We like to do voluntary work with Kenya Xperience! again.
Echt top. Dit nemen ze me nooit meer af.
Elize van Dalsen My experience with Kenya Xperience! could not have been better.
